About

Hey, I’m Noah Carter, a mechanical engineering student at the University of South Carolina, graduating in December 2027.

Right now I’m an intern at the Center for Industry Solutions, where I’m designing and building my own drone docking and charging station. I also serve as project manager for a team of three fellows, leading them through their project. Outside of work, I’m a member of UofSC’s SAMPE student chapter and the Carolina Sales Institute for Engineering and Technology. This summer I worked in the field with Piedmont Mechanical on commercial HVAC projects.

Outside of school and work, I’m usually making something or outdoors. I love hunting and fishing. I spend a lot of time designing and printing my own parts on my 3D printer, and I like building things with my hands, whether it’s LEGO or a new woodworking project.

I’m looking for mechanical engineering internships and co-op opportunities.

Center for Industry Solutions

Oct 2025 – Present

Intern

Aug 2026 – Present
  • Redesigned the self-centering docking mechanism from a 4-motor to a 2-motor lead-screw system, cutting motor count 50% while maintaining alignment tolerance.
  • Engineered a contact-based charging system (pogo-pin drone legs, 4-plate copper pad, bridge rectifier) that resolves charging polarity across any landing orientation without added sensors.
  • Built and programmed an Arduino Uno state machine to coordinate landing detection, alignment, and charging across dual stepper motors and a pressure-sensor trigger, sourcing the full charging station prototype with a $300 budget.
  • Manage a team of 3 fellows as Project Manager, running design reviews and weekly check-ins to keep the project on a 10-week schedule.
  • Currently broadening CAD skills by self-teaching CATIA V5 through CATIA V5 for Designers, 15th Edition.

Engineering Fellow

Oct 2025 – May 2026
  • Modeled mechanical components in SolidWorks, Creo, and CATIA and fabricated functional prototypes on Bambu Lab 3D printers.
  • Completed 2 certifications in deep learning and computer vision for industrial inspection applications.
  • Collaborated with a 5-person team to design the initial drone docking and charging concept, later scoped into the Intern-phase build.
  • Gained exposure to digital twins through Siemens Process Simulate.

Piedmont Mechanical, Inc.

May 2026 – Aug 2026

Mechanical Engineering Intern · Spartanburg, SC

  • Conducted 10+ field site visits across 2 industrial/commercial HVAC projects, coordinating with project managers to resolve field issues and keep installs on schedule.
  • Reviewed a $134,500 mechanical subcontract, flagging 3 contract risk clauses before execution to protect project terms.
  • Resolved a field discrepancy on a wall-diffuser installation against submittal specs after holes were pre-cut, confirming correct equipment to prevent rework.
  • Diagnosed an oversized offset using laser-measured reference points off each wall and the ceiling, then calculated the exact cut length in SolidWorks to give the fabrication shop a corrected dimension.

Toll Solutions

May 2024 – Aug 2025

Lab Intern · Duncan, SC

  • Performed ATR tests on over 1,000 products and raw material samples to support database development and unknown sample identification.
  • Followed lab safety and quality control procedures while supporting day-to-day operations.

01Drone Docking Station

Center for Industry Solutions · 2025 – 2026
  • Self-centering pad that aligns a landed drone with a 2-motor lead-screw system, down from the original 4-motor design.
  • Contact charging through pogo-pin legs and a 4-plate copper pad. A bridge rectifier handles polarity, so the drone can land in any orientation.
  • Arduino Uno state machine runs the sequence: a pressure sensor detects landing, dual stepper motors align, then charging starts. Full prototype sourced on a $300 budget.
